E3 08: Wii Music Finally Announced
Posted 5 months, 3 weeks ago by 00.19

To close out their big press conference, Nintendo unveiled what is sure to be the least impressive game announced at E3, Wii Music. After nearly 2 years of development, Miyamoto’s casual music experience looks to completely underwhelm just about every person who plays it. In a market already crowded with big music games (Rock Band, Guitar Hero), and even more coming (Rock Revolution, Guitar Hero World Tour), I question Nintendo’s strategy here. They even said during their press conference that Guitar Hero has sold better on the Wii than any other console, so why put out another game that looks and sounds way worse?

I’m actually completely baffled that this announcement was the big gun they were unveiling. Sure, you could say the new motion controller was the true big gun, but they didn’t wait until the end to announce it. I’m just not convinced Nintendo is concerned with putting out quality games at a pace to match other systems. But I guess they don’t really have to when the Wii and DS are still selling at an insane pace.

The whole Wii Music concert at the end there really did seem awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved.

I'm usually a defender of Nintendo, but... how do you defend Wii Music and an E3 press conference with no big announcements?

Nintendo's basically phoning it in now. They've realized that they'll make gobs of money no matter what they do, so they're just letting it ride. At least for this year.

However, they may still have a trick or two up their sleeve. Remember the Brawl trailer a couple years ago (maybe last year, but I think it was '06)? That wasn't shown at their keynote, but it was still HUGE.

After Guitar Hero, Singstar and Rock Band, is this such a good idea...?

Sigh... so weak. And as their one BIG announcement, epic fail.
