Atari’s Focus to Shift to Multiplayer
Posted 6 months ago by Coop

Phil Harrison’s jump from Sony to Atari didn’t make much sense to anyone, as he seemed to have leapt from a somewhat cracking, but stable Sony ship, to the burning mast of Atari’s sinking schooner. It does appear he has a plan to save the dying publisher, as he explained in a recent interview with website Gamasutra.
"I don't see that we're going to be making huge-budget, single-player games in the future. Now, that doesn't mean that we won't have ambition to do really incredible games that have high quality, high execution, and high innovation, but they won't be one-player, narrative-driven, start-middle-end games."

Their last big budget, single player excursion is to be Alone in the Dark, which will release late next month, and looks like it might be the first game by the publisher worth buying since Pong. I can’t say that I blame them on this choice, but it does seem that they could fix the problem instead of just ignoring it: their single player games have sucked as of recent. Don’t ditch them entirely, just make them not suck anymore and gamers will embrace your titles with open arms. I can’t think of a good multiplayer game by Atari that came out recently, so the choice does seem like a snap reaction to a problem that could be fixed in better ways. Then again, if Alone in the Dark sells really well I think we will see Infogrames stray from Phil Harrison’s words as fast as Sony did with the PS3.

The physics look pretty spectacular from the trailers I've seen, and the ability of lighting fires seems like a cool concept to throw in a game....
