- Devil May Cry Creator Speaks Out Against Action Games
- Posted 7 months, 2 weeks ago by Coop

Hideki Kamiya, creator of the Devil May Cry series, isn’t the household name that game designers like Will Wright and Shigeru Miyamoto are. In fact, I hadn’t even heard his name spoken until this incident, which means he has at least been somewhat well behaved before this. Today, however, is a different story, and Kamiya had some harsh things to say about the genre he “blazed a new trail” for.
How have 3D action games evolved since we blazed a new trail with DMC? Can you even go so far as to say they’ve evolved? Seven years ago, we put everything we had into Devil May Cry. But since then, like the hands of time for the 3D action genre were frozen at that moment, it seems like the drive to push users further has stopped. There is so much more that should be done now. And we are the only ones who seem up to the task. This is the spark that has lit the fire within me.
He doesn’t come out and blast any one specific title, per say, like the Ninja Gaiden developer often does, but he does lodge his foot deeply into his mouth. Even the most positive and glowing reviews of Devil May Cry 4 criticized the game for not straying far from its origins, and as his games have become more advanced visually they haven’t really done much in the ways of evolution in terms of gameplay. DMC4 may have been one of the most hack-and-slashy games this generation. However, he does have a point – 3D adventure games haven’t evolved much since Devil May Cry reinvented the genre. What do you think? Is he right, or just trying to become the next Tomonobu Itagaki?

The thing that's wrong with The Entertainment Industry these days whether it's in movies, tv shows, music or even Videogaming the problem lies in the "Lack of Creativity" When DMC Came out it was Original in terms of Creativity and now eversince it came out it's made an Impact and Inspired Imitators, Other Game Innovators like Kamiya and Itagaki will strive to do something different as well as take it a step further not just in art and storytelling but also in Gameplay.
Kamiya shouldn't pat himself on the back too hard, there were plenty of fantastic action games before DMC, and I'm sure there will be more after it is long gone...
There's not much you can do with the genre besides try and make it more badass than before, and that's what it's been about since Double Dragon and Golden Axe. It's a basic game. Press square to attack and jump if you feel like it. Devil May Cry is one of those 'feel good' games where you don't need to do much to think that you've accomplished something.
