PS3 Firmware Update v2.17 Live
Posted 9 months, 4 weeks ago by Coop

Today, Playstation 3 owners who turn on their systems will be prompted with a firmware update. Nothing big, but I am sure there is a Final Fantasy XI fan crying with joy right now as he runs to his local store to buy a Playstation 3. Finally, this is his day.

Website StrategyInformer Reports on the update:

“Seems that the Japanese website is actually detailing information about compatibility with Final Fantasy XI, which required a HDD for the PS2. So, any games that require HDD installs for the PS2 will now work on the PS3.”

That’s right, any game on the Playstation 2 that required a hard drive, can now be played on backwards compatible PS3s. I am sure there are millions of 40gig owners that are scratching their heads, confused, about what this means to them.

Still no in-game XMB, still no overhaul to the atrocity that is the Playstation Store, and still no Home. It makes me wonder why Sony bothers releasing a firmware update this small instead of just waiting until they have an excuse to get people excited. Updates like this just serve as a reminder of how far they still have to go.

Alas, I'm going to give this give this one more shot...

News articles are supposed to be objective, i.e. free of bias. In fact, the entire concept of news revolves solely around the notion that it is up to the READER to decide where they personally stand in regards to the issue being reported. That's what makes news well... news.

As any fledgling Journalism student could tell you, when something is written in a overtly sarcastic tone (like the article to the left) it no longer maintains its objectivity. Thus, according to journalistic standards, the article in question is no longer a reliable news source; rather, it is an opinion piece. It's that simple.

(Again) my point is, I read news for information of the un-opinionated variety. To say that even the briefest of news events was "hard to write in a positive tone" and that the new update didn't "deserve" to have anything good said about it makes it pretty clear that I'm getting one man's fairly slanted interpretation of a news story, rather than the story itself. I would have the same exact reaction if the article was overtly positive; it's just not reliable. Period.

Why not release the PS3 with the basics?...
in game XMB and home is things that most people want!
and whats taking them so long to do it?
its just sony screwing their own costumers

Holy Crap!!! I love my PS 3 way more than my Xbox 360, and I would say the same thing the exact way. Each console has it strengths and flaws, and with Sony and Microsoft doing things you should expect both. The Xbox 360 production was rushed and a lot of 360s don't read disks 75% of the time, and Sony likes to make empty promises and support things only a small fraction of PS 3 owners will actually use. Not everything these companies do is going to be in the consumer's best interest, so not all news about them will be good.

Did you even waste your money on Final Fantasy XI? What a polished turd that was!!!

Why would Sony, with all of the things that they have promised and not delivered on, would they put something like support for games that required the Hard Drive over a revamped Network Store, or Home which was shown about a year or more ago??

That is the point that he's making, not trying to make. I got it loud and clear.

So for most of us this would be bad news (the update not doing anything important), but to the group of people that still like killing Wild Hares and the other lame leveling fodder in Final Fantasy XI and also happen to own a PS 3, this is the best thing since sliced bread, probably.

By that logic, anything can get a positive spin.

Good news! Capcom is milking another franchise to death!

Good news! EA is buying a company, I bet their stockholders will be happy!

Good news! Microsoft is making a lot of money by charging for Xbox Live!

Good news! You won't have to worry about people bothering you in Mario Kart because it wont have voice chat!

Yeah, everything can have a positive tone. Not everything deserves it. This doesn't deserve it. I will admit, there are times when I am overly harsh on the PS3, but this isn't one of them.

Why is it hard to write in a positive tone? Personally, I like knowing the notion of numerous and incremental updates, regardless of their relative size or perceived importance. Especially since Final Fanstasy XI for the PS2 is still a relevant and fairly popular game in Japan, I think this newest Firmware update is definately a relevant and "positive" topic to report on.

Hah, I know. But it is sort of hard to write up this story with a positive tone.

Oh, Coop. I know that you know that I know that a PS3 firmware update is news. My only gripe is the manner in which said news was delivered.

Sorry, I thought the fact that Sony put an update on the PS3 was news. My bad! Next time I will just ignore it until they do something newsworthy by your standards.

I could go and nit-pick each and every instance where it occurs; but I don't really think I need to. It's pretty clear that there's a slew of bias here. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my 360, but quasi-fanboyism does not equate to news in my book.

Blog? Perhaps. News? Certainly not.
