- R.I.P. - Gary Gygax Dies at 69
- Posted 8 months, 3 weeks ago by Coop
There are many people that can be pointed at as innovators for this amazing industry we all love and follow. One such man is Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons. If you have never played D&D you might not know how much he has contributed to the gaming industry, but rest assured that he is responsible for many of what have become staples in gaming.
The first few Final Fantasy titles, which many believe began the RPG genre for games, shamelessly took nearly every single rule from Dungeons and Dragons and, until this day, nearly every RPG still has its share of D&D elements. Things like hit-points, damage ranges, even some of the basic fundamental magic abilities can all be traced to him. Today, after a health struggle for several years, he has passed away. Here is the story from the Associated Press.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) — A sad day for fans of role-playing games: The man who co-created Dungeons & Dragons is dead.
Gary Gygax died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wis. His wife Gail says the 69-year-old had been suffering from health problems for several years.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
It's considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games and has inspired legions of adoring fans. Gygax's wife says he always enjoyed hearing from them.
Gamervision’s hearts go out to the family of Gary Gygax and wish them the best, he will be missed. We will make sure we pour out a few dice from our bag of D20s in his memory.

4.0 must be pretty bad!
I agree with VSM. Fix grappling dammit. I was kinda upset by the actual penny arcade illustration. It had like 50 shitty tangents.
Still, gonna miss the man of vision.
It's gonna take a while until someone can come up with something as involving and still social as DND, or even a new engine transcending the need for hitpoints.
Did you guys see the Penny Arcade comic about this?
"Rolling in his grave"
ROFL/awful
You can tell in that picture he's like "I have to roll how many times to grapple? What has this game come to?"
He's in the land of wizards now.
RIP. Who knows what I'd be playing if it wasn't for this guy.
RIP to an RPG Legend.
