- Rumor: Chainsaw Battle!
- Posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago by Coop
In the original Gears of War, attacking an enemy with a chainsaw resulted in an instant kill. While it was admittedly awesome and the bloody chunks that would be thrown around were very fun to watch, it did prove to be somewhat cheap in the multiplayer portion of the game. Mediocre hit detection and lag made the chainsaw one of the best weapons, because even lag couldn’t stop you from tumbling behind someone and putting a blade to their throat.
Gamervision was live at GDC when Epic revealed Gears of War 2 at Microsoft’s Press Event a few days ago. The teaser, which featured a silhouette of Marcus fighting a Locust in an epic chainsaw battle, was thought to just be a cool way to get people excited about the sequel. Rumors are rumbling that it was actually more then that, and that Gears of War 2 may actually feature combat similar to that seen here.
A writer for Variety confirmed, while talking to sources close to Epic developers, that this was to be a feature in the game.
“I was talking to two people last night who are close enough to the development team at Epic to know and they confirmed for me that this will be a mechanic in the game: When somebody tries to chainsaw you, there will be a way to push back with your own chainsaw gun and potentially fend them off or, possibly, end up chopping them into a bloody pile of flesh chunks.”
If what we saw in the trailer does end up making it into the final game there are a few ways it could play out. I imagine they could easily turn it into a button mashing minigame, where clicking the analog stick back and fourth or hitting the attack button faster then your opponent would have them being on the short end of your Lancer. Either way, I look forward to the upcoming title.

I was just excited to see Cliffy B come out on stage with the Lancer. It was the highlight of GDC, for me anyway.
I just wonder if you'll still be able to chainsaw yourself in the second installment?
Nice. The nerdy, nervous guy that spoke about this game at the GDC announcment made it seem like this wasn't the only addition to the intense gameplay of the first game, like perhaps more than one way to skin a locust with the chainsaw gun. I will be very interested to see how the game changes whether for better or for worse, as of now though, I will be playing this one when it hits the shelves.
cliffy b has a lancer. do want. do want so badly.
There is nothing wrong with fighting with chainsaws. Gotta love it
... must... play!
