Wii Fit Sales Triumph Over GTA in Australia
Posted 4 months, 3 weeks ago by Coop

The sales numbers for the second week since Grand Theft Auto IV came out have been released in Australia, and the results show an unexpected turn. Niko has been dethroned from the top spot by Nintendo’s Wii Fit, which sold more copies than GTA for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  1. Wii Fit (Wii)
  2. Grand Theft Auto IV (360)
  3. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
  4. Wii Play (Wii)
  5. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  6. More Brain Training (DS)
  7. Brain Training (DS)
  8. Time Crisis 4 (PS3)
  9. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)
  10. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3)

There could be several reasons for this. The Australian version of GTA was censored in several different, unmentioned ways that Rockstar promised wasn’t detrimental to the final product. Many people “down under” complained and said they would import, so that could be a cause. It is also possible that GTA’s sales numbers were knocked down due to there being two versions of the game.

Or maybe we have underestimated Wii Fit’s popularity worldwide, and we might see the same numbers in America this week. With the Nintendo Wii’s popularity growing in the face of limited popular releases, gamers are begging for anything to play on their system. Many of the people who bought the system grabbed it for the gimmick, and Wii Fit seems to be the king of gimmicks.

But do these numbers reflect the amount of overseas copies that were purchased by the Australians who wanted an uncensored copy of the game?
