Mass Effect Movie
Posted About 1 month ago by QMarc80

Hopping inbetween sites I came across a little news about Mass Effect. No, it's not downloadable content, it's a movie. This news came relayed from the Ripten blog. I didn't believe it so I saw the guy's source as being Variety.com and decided to click on the link. Do you want to know what I found on that page? I found this! News of a Mass Effect movie. Apparently the rights were optioned by Avi Arad. Here's a snipet of the posting:

Both EA and Arad declined to comment, but it's a good bet that Avi is right now trying to put together the elements to get a movie going, including a writer, director, and most importantly, setting it up at a studio. When and if that happens, we'll have a lot more insight into just what kind of a movie "Mass Effect" might be.

What else can you ask for? Only thing is that I'm hoping that they don't screw it up. This IS the guy who started the good comic book movie franchise phenomenon that's sweeping the world.

Keep your fingers crossed!

I can't think of a better game to adapt than Mass Effect, nor a better producer to oversee it than Arad. This is the guy who produced the X-Men trilogy, 2/3 of the Spider-Man movies, and Iron Man. Then again, he also produced Elektra and the other 1/3 of the Spider-Man trilogy, so...

CAREFUL NOW! I know this should go without saying, but this, like every production, is practically Schroedinger's Movie until Joe Schmoe like you and me can walk into a theatre with a bag of popcorn. Productions change hands, get stalled, and canceled all the time. And even Variety can be full of hot air.

I'm not saying that this is bogus, but I am suggesting everyone keep their daydreams in check until at LEAST principal photography is in the can. As someone who's worked on films, I can tell you that everything is pretty much theory until you've got picture locked. "Lost in La Mancha" is recommended viewing for anyone wishing to get a little perspective on the filmmaking process.

Let's also keep in mind that adaptations RARELY do their subject matter justice. You can bet that this movie won't offer anywhere near the depth of the game(s), and will probably be mostly about 1) explosions, 2) weird aliens, 3) sexy women. Why? Because that's what producers think audiences want to see. That doesn't mean that these three things, strung together with a decent plot, won't make for a good movie, but the heaping piles of text will probably be noticeably absent.

Sorry to be a naysayer. I'm speaking just as speculatively as anyone else. Mass Effect is one of the best games I've ever played so I'm just as happy to have a movie as anyone!

This could be really good, I really liked Mass Effect because it reminded me of Babylon 5 which is one of my favorite sci-fi series ever. Please don't mess the Mass.

Me and another gamer were just discussing that Mass Effect would be one of the easiest game-movie translations ever made.......it's all laid out for them all ready all they have to do is run with it.....

One thing is for sure: this movie will have a lot of dialogue.
