Echochrome First Impressions
Posted 5 months, 2 weeks ago by Sarah

Yesterday, Sean posted a new video for Echochrome, the upcoming PS3 puzzler that bends the laws of physics with an interesting take on perspective. Everyone in the room was foaming at the mouth over this game, and last night I downloaded the demo when it hit the PlayStation Store.

Suffice it to say that the Echochrome demo definitely left me wanting more. Instead of controlling the character like in most games, the player only moves the level itself, shifting the perspective to cover up holes in the floor, gaps in the path, or to jump from one platform to another. The background music, a soft instrumental tone, is simple and yet totally fitting. Playing this for the first time, it feels similar to your first time playing Portal: it looks neat, but you’re not quite sure what you’re getting into, only that it’s going to be different.

If you’ve seen any of the videos, then you pretty much already know all you need to about Echochrome. If it looked good to you, you will likely dig it. If you like innovative puzzlers, this is definitely a good fit for you. It took me a level or two to get used to the controls (simple as they are, it’s still odd to be controlling an environment and not a character), but luckily the demo even includes a lovely tutorial.

There’s no word yet on what the pricing will be when Echochrome does come out, but this is still something I’d consider picking up even at full price, especially if they release it on PSP as well. Given that there will also be level-building tools in the full version of the game, this could be the kind of puzzler that keeps you occupied for a long time. Gamervision will keep you updated on further release information, assuming that we can stay away from the demo long enough to write about it.

btw FemJesse I agree.

(12 year olds these days tend to be little retards. Not all but the majority, yes.)

Bad Whitey... A twelve year old could never program a physics engine that complex.

Duh!

Makyo you took the words right out of my mouth. The game looks like a 12 year old programed it.
