Welcome to the Wii Fit Workout Update, a weekly article letting you know how the Gamervision staff (those who stick with it, anyway) are doing with Wii Fit. It’s now been two weeks since the game’s launch, and as you may have read in last week’s review, my own early results were positive after a week of daily Wii Fit workouts. Want to know if the game is still taking a toll after two weeks of aerobics, strength training, and balance exercises? Read on to find out how I did.
First, I think a little information about my exercise routine is in order. For the past two weeks, I’ve been using Wii Fit six days a week, thirty minutes a day. With only a couple of exceptions, I used Wii Fit at the same time every day, which is necessary to get the most accurate results due to normal daily weight fluctuations. I have already unlocked all of the exercises available in the game, but tend to stick with my favorites since they seem to be working. I began in the “normal” weight category, but still wanted to shed some pounds and, more importantly, become more physically fit. Even though I was not overweight, I was still horribly out of shape and have been for most of my adult life. Making that change was most important to me.
For the first week, I tried to spend equal time on exercises from all four categories (balance, aerobics, strength, and yoga). I set my two-week weight loss goal at five pounds—two pounds more than the recommended weight loss amount for that period of time. It was a lofty goal, but I thought I could do it. I didn’t change my eating habits, but I was already somewhat healthy in my diet choices, so I didn’t feel the need to cut out additional calories.
Within the first few days, I noticed an immediate weight loss—three whole pounds before the first week was over. “Wow, losing five pounds in two weeks is going to be easy!” I thought. Of course, weight loss is never easy when you don’t have a super-fast metabolism, and in the last few years mine has seemingly ground to a halt, because I tend to gain weight really fast if I’m not careful. After one day of eating poorly and not exercising (due to being at a wedding out of state), I gained 1.5 pounds! That was pretty depressing. Still, I finished out the first week about two pounds lighter.
For the second week, I put more of a focus on aerobics than anything else. I started increasing my run times, eventually working my way up to the Island Run, which is 10+ minutes long. That may not sound like a lot to some people, but I have never been able to run for ten minutes straight in my entire life. When I first started Wii Fit, it was a struggle to complete the shortest run of the game, which is only about three minutes. However, I’ve done the Island Run three days in a row now, and while it’s definitely tough, I was more motivated to keep running than I ever have been before. The point is, my endurance is getting higher and I am more in shape than I was two weeks ago, and that is definitely a triumph.
My balance has also improved, though not drastically. However, I’m definitely becoming more aware of my posture, and not just for the 30 minutes a day I’m on the balance board. I think about it when I’m at work, when I’m cooking, or when I’m just hanging around the house. I still tend to lean on my heels and a little to the left, but I’m working on it. Hopefully in time, being a balanced person will come more naturally to me.
In the end, I fell a little short of my five-pound weight loss goal—but just barely. It was a little disappointing, but I think I need to be more realistic about what I can accomplish while still being healthy. Despite only having lost four pounds (which is still pretty good, I think), I’m seeing improvements all around and plan to stick with it. My next weight loss goal is three pounds, and I will be back in two weeks to let you know if I make it.
What about the rest of you? Is anyone else sticking with it? Anyone give up after the first day? Whether or not you’re seeing results, feel free to share your Wii Fit progress with the rest of us.
