Welcome to the Wii Fit Workout Update, a weekly article letting you know how the Gamervision staff (those who stick with it, anyway) are doing with Wii Fit. It’s now been four weeks since the game’s launch, and my balance board is still getting lots of use. Want to know if the game is still taking a toll after weeks of aerobics, strength training, and balance exercises? Read on to find out how I’ve been doing.
It’s now been almost a month since Wii Fit launched, and I’m still doing it just about every single day. I spent the first three weeks using it for 30 minutes a day, but have now upped my time exercising to 35 minutes. The reason for this is not because I necessarily wasn’t spending enough time working out, but because I moved up to the expert level of rhythm boxing, which takes longer, and didn’t want to exclude any of the other elements of my daily routine.
I started the week the same way I finished the last one, with about a third of my workout devoted to strength training and the rest of the time spent on aerobics. However, yesterday I decided to change it up yet again, spending the entire half hour or so on calorie-burning aerobics. I find aerobics more enjoyable, they supposedly help you lose weight faster, and it’s almost bathing suit season, so it just made sense. Also, I find that it’s good to switch up the different exercises every week to prevent getting bored.

My new workout starts out with Expert Rhythm Boxing, which I actually really like. It’s tough, but I always feel really good and accomplished when I’m done. I have been really digging the step exercise, but wish there was something more than the 5-minute Advanced Step the game offers, which, unlike boxing, is the same every time. Because of this, I finally tried out Free Step, during which you basically do the same stepping exercise for 10 minutes while watching TV. I was afraid that I wouldn’t burn as many calories that way, but after cranking up the speed and listening to the Wii remote to make sure I was stepping in time, I think I still got a good workout out of it. I’ll have to do it a few more times to see if it makes any kind of difference.
Since those two take up a good 20 minutes or so, I finish off my workout with a Free Run, which I did for the first time last week. I’ve been enjoying running much more since I’ve been able to watch TV while I do it, and I love that the remote measures your pacing and distance while you run. I just wish there was another option between 10 and 20 minutes, since I’m definitely not ready to kick it up to twenty. Maybe someday, but not today.
I’ve found that my weight has been dropping more slowly, but remaining consistently lower than it’s been since I started using Wii Fit. I’ve lost an average of 2 pounds a week, and unlike that first week where some of it went back on almost immediately, now the weight appears to be staying off, even if I have days where I eat more than usual. Even though there are days when I don’t feel like working out (especially with the recent heat wave we’ve been having), I always feel great after I’m done, and that keeps me motivated to keep on going. Being able to fit into clothes I haven’t worn since college is also a great motivator.

Some people have been surprised that I’m still using Wii Fit on a daily basis, especially considering how averse to exercise I have been for most of my adult life. However, after doing it for a month, it’s now just a natural part of my daily routine: come home from work, do Wii Fit, eat dinner. It’s as much a part of my day as brushing my teeth or cooking dinner. I can’t say that this motivation will last forever, but I hope it lasts long enough for me to lose those last few pounds that have been hanging around my belly. Go away, fat, go away!
What about the rest of you? Is anyone happy with Wii Fit? Anyone regret making this purchase? Whether or not you’re seeing results, feel free to share your Wii Fit progress with the rest of us.
