Activision/Blizzard Merger Puts Some Games on the Chopping Block
Posted 5 months, 1 weeks ago by Sarah

Okay, keep in mind that this story is still developing, and I’m getting information from several different sources here, so let’s not panic yet. Here’s what we know: when the Activision/Blizzard merger became official, some of the titles that were scheduled to be published by Sierra (which, like Activision, is owned by Vivendi, and of which Activision is a parent company) came into question. Some of these are titles that have been in development for quite awhile and were scheduled to be released later this year.

Activision has already announced that it will be publishing new titles in the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series, a new Ice Age game, and Prototype, so those games are safe. That’s right, guys, you can breathe a sigh of relief that you will be getting your yearly mediocre Crash game. So what’s missing? Among others that I couldn’t care less about (i.e., 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand), upcoming games Ghostbusters, WET, and Brütal Legend have uncertain futures at the moment.

Now, Sierra has since gone ahead and stated that “Ghostbusters is not cancelled and never will be”, according to Destructoid. Well, that’s fine and all, but where the hell is Brütal Legend? You know, the Tim Schafer game about a roadie featuring the voice acting of Jack Black slated for a December 2008 release? The game that I have had pre-ordered for almost a year and was in my top three most anticipated titles of 2008? Yeah, no one really knows what’s happening with that right now.

We will keep you updated on the status of Brütal Legend and the rest of the Sierra games whose futures are in question at the moment. There has been so much work put into Brütal Legend thus far that it seems ridiculous that Activision/Blizzard would just scrap the whole thing, but you never know. I would like to think that Activision would be more than willing to let the game live given the high quality of all Tim Schafer’s past projects, but why would they do that when they could further milk the franchises they already have?
