- Comparison: Cable vs. U-Verse
- Posted 3 months ago by Sean
Let's be real for a second: no one, myself included, spends all of their free time gaming. I don't want to speak for everyone, but, from time to time, I've been known to read a book, go for a hike, or even take in a movie. But the vast majority of the time that I don't spend with a game controller in my hand is spent with remote control instead, cause I'm watching TV. Now, depending on where you live, you have a few options for your delivery, not just of television, but of internet and telephone too. Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner have been the heavier hitters in this triple-threat market. And now At&t has come along with U-Verse, their own entry into the quickly crowding field. But the question is: is it any good?
Our friend Geoff (an avid gamer himself) at Home Entertainment has written a comparison between U-Verse and cable delivery that will help to answer that very question. Here's a taste:
Which is better, or more precisely, which isn't worse
It's not that I hated Time Warner Cable. In fact, in a lot of ways I kind of liked them. For several years, I had the Scientific Atlanta 8000HD DVR box, which, after many updates, was a pretty decent piece of equipment. Then, after my second one died (as hard-drive based equipment is bound to do), they gave me the 8300HDC. This is the worst consumer electronics product I've ever used, and my days with TWC were numbered. And along came AT&T.
When TWC first started offering HD, it had local channels, and more extra HD channels than satellite. And in reality, that's all I care about. The satellite companies have quickly leapfrogged TWC's offerings, to the point now where cable looks ancient by comparison. Getting satellite where I am would have been a hassle, so I kept going with what I had. After all, the DVR (the 8000HD, that is) worked pretty well, and the signal looked great. Best of all, it outputted the native resolution of the program. "Lost" in 720p anyone?

I keeps things simple and buy DVDs.
I am stuck with the world of Comcast: a world of shitty customer service, pixelated digital signals, and ever-increasing bills.
I know I should switch to Verizon, but I am just worried that I would be switching the devil I know for the one I don't.
My father has the U-Verse service. He doesn't know the difference between anything, though. I wish he did. His tech knowledge is extremely low-tech. He always thinks he has to talk loud for you to hear him on his cell phone, yada-yada, and doesn't appreciate the computer that I spent five stores and eight associates to help him make the purchase (all in one day, I might add!).
From a tech perspective I'd have to say that his television isn't the greatest plasma out there. He owns a 42" Magnavox Plasma. I know a U-Verse tech at the hotel I work at (he's the guy that replaces me on Sundays) and he said that that particular plasma won't sync with the HDMI cable.
I think my verdict still goes along with cable for only the online gaming aspect. DSL, no matter the form it comes, seems to always have something happen where it hiccups or kicks you off your server.
