- Ubisoft Buys Tom Clancy's Name
- Posted 9 months, 3 weeks ago by Sean

Game publisher Ubisoft made a blockbuster deal today to buy the rights to the Tom Clancy name for all future gaming endeavors, as well as book publishing, merchandising, and possible film rights. No price was announced for the deal, but you can pretty much rest assured that there were many, many zeros on the end of that check. One Newsweek blogger estimates that the Clancy brand could be worth as much as $100 million.
Furthermore, GameDaily is reporting on a conference call in which Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot announced that the company was looking to develop a Tom Clancy MMO, with a projected price tag of $50 million. Not quite the billion that some people will tell you is needed to get a successful MMO off the ground...
I personally don't hold great excitement for one company holding the reins of a huge franchise like this. I would rather see a gaggle of different hands trying an idea to see whose is the best. Although I guess that kind of thinking leads to games like Call of Duty 3.
