Brawl Kills Wii
Posted 7 months ago by TinyChinaDoll

So as a dominantly Mario Kart/SSBB player, it is time for me to admit this.

Brawl has badly broken our Wiis. Badly.

At first, I pushed it away as 'loading time' for a big game. But now Mario Kart is doing it too. And what have I found?

Your wii may not be damaged to this extent, but from what I have gathered from calls to Nintendo service line, Wii was not originally intended to read duel layer discs.  The quiet 'ka-chink, ka-chink, kachink..' sound of your wii reading games is its death clock, slowly grinding down the gears until it is completely useless to you.

Do yourself a favor and send it in before your warrantee dries up. I thought I had evaded this problem but on second inspection, my wii was doing it too ):. And if you brawlers haven't heard the sound yet? Turn the sound down on the TV and pay attention to your wii. It's CRYING to you for god's sake!

Ah well, no harm no foul. At least my PS3 hasn't needed the send-in. In the meantime, I'm going to kill some time blowing up whores on GTAIV!

Puxel is right, there was a notice about this particular wii error. We got ours just after it came out so I think we passed the 1 yr warrantee date.. but they are being very generous about fixing our wii for free and getting it to us asap.

No no...the console itself is fine. I it was the lens on some launch consoles. It wasn't powerful enough to read dual layer discs, which hasn't been a problem up until then. It WAS an issue at the time, but after the Wiis that couldn't read DVD9s were weeded out it wasn't an issue. That's why no one really heard about it. Nintendo had a notice up on their website the day after Brawl was released in the states.

Weird, mine has doing this sound since day 1, back in january of last year (2006), and had 0 problems with it actually.

Personally, I think it's more of a coincidence than anything as if it was indeed Smash's fault, then wouldn't there be a much bigger report of this around?

Smash has been one of the biggest Wii selling game yet, with the amount of copies sold, if indeed this game was breaking wiis, we would've heard about it a lot more.

It's pretty much like the 360... "Game X" RRoD my system.... no proof that it did, it just happen to be the game in when it happened.

Bummer indeed

Brawl is the ONLY DVD9 game for the console. The Wii isn't know for pumping out the highest resolution video, so most games from now on are going to be single layer. They will send you a new Wii with the D2C chipset and drive if you contact them soon enough.

I've heard that "ka-chink, ka-chink" and thought to myself, "Self, that can't be a good sound. No, Self, those machines are supposed to whir, not chunk." I didn't know it was my Wii dying.

That's bad news. Does anyone know if Boom Blox is dual layered?

Actually, I think you're right. My Wii hasn't been the same since Brawl.

thanks for the condolences, but it's the death of a wii not a first child! xD

err.. not that i would not be heartless towards a second or a third child's death.

Interesting and scary, thanks for the warning. My sympathies to your Wii, it will be missed.

I'll go grab a stethoscope and give it a try tonight. My poor Wii, I don't want it to die......
