- Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries

This was the second 1st person shooter I had ever played (my first being the memory of sitting in my dad's lap and learning how to toggle weapons and shoot baddies on Wolfenstein 3d at the age of 8), and my god it still is one of my favorites. Though the graphics are shy of how epic I remembered them to be (I'm sure they were great for the time), the storyline and the gameplay makes this a worthwhile one to pick up. While it is a mechanized unit storyline, make no mistake that it is NOT the cutesy cartoony Gundam Wingish wars.
After the intro, you're immediately thrown into an epic war of clans transcending stars and eventually time as the game goes on to another 2 sequels. As you choose your campaigns and which paths to follow as well as which recruits, upgrades and mechs to buy and build, your story may unravel differently but ultimately twist into the same last scenario.
The most annoying part of the game was getting back into the controls. Part ass kicking, part flight sim, seriously! Do we really need eight different buttons on which direction to jettison? Save often, and seriously learn how to fucking use that jet pack! You'll need it when some jackass blows your legs off and you're face to face with his homing missiles. And don't go into battle without remembering to repair your armor.. like I did countless times.
This game, a project that began in the early 90s, is reminisce of all the console games we left behind from Win 95. It really shows a lot of innovation and great plot from an early Activision, as well as online capability. This is one for the history books, and one to try if you're in need of some serious blast to the past gameplay.

I wish I had a mech......
I remember playing that game a lot ;) Though I kind of missed the freedom the original Mechwarrior game offered ;)
