Xbox 360 Sells Out In Japan
Posted 4 months, 3 weeks ago by Veggie Jackson

The above picture is of a Japanese electronics retailer called Yodobashi Camera.  By all accounts, it is one of the largest stores of its kind on the planet.  Inside, you’ll find a variety of electronic equipment that would make Circuit City cry like little baby girls.  From Blu-Ray DVD players to home audio equipment to cabling to digital cameras, whatever piece of tech you seek, you’ll find it here.  Unless, strangely enough, you happen to be looking for an Xbox 360; they’re sold out of them.

Yes, that’s right, it’s currently real tough for Japanese gamers to get their hands on the American system that they usually avoid like a plague-infected possum corpse.  So why the rush on 360s?  Well, there’s the theory that Tales of Vesperia, Namco Bandai’s new RPG, is helping to sell consoles at a pace unseen since the release of Ace Combat 6.  There’s another, less interesting theory going around that blames it on stores reducing stock to make room for the new 60GB models, but that wouldn’t explain the fact that as of yesterday, Amazon’s Japanese site was also sold out of 360s.  So does this mean that the Japanese have finally noticed the fact that the console exists?  Are they no longer afraid that it will try to bite them while they insert game discs?  Tough to say, but this sales spike does go a long way towards justifying Microsoft’s support of turn-based RPGs.  Maybe it will even convince Square Enix to release a Japanese 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII.  I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.

It's really funny that they would release it that way. It really says a lot about how different the two markets are.

Also, it shows how freaking smart Square is. Play both sides...this is some Yojimbo shit right here.

Yeah dude, I would wager a bet that FF is a definite 360 release in Japan.

Actually, are they planning on releasing it on Japanese PS3s? Or has that not be announced?

I think one theory might be that there are not many 360's on the shelf period or even available in Japan so while yes it is sold out, there were not that many systems on the shelves in the first place because of lack of demand? I think Vesperia though is a huge boost in these sales, whether this can continue after this game comes out is another thing.

They found out about Castle Crashers. Isn't it obvious?
Tales of Vespiria already came out in Japan (saw a friend playing it), but I bet its because Final Fantasy is coming out on both consoles. If something in Japan says Final Fantasy on it, it won't be on shelves for long.

I'm sure inside of this store you will also find vending machines selling school-girl underwear.
