- Mass Effect PC to require an internet connection
- Posted 5 months ago by Zantagor
According to thread at the official Forums,
Mass Effect PC will require an online registration process to be able to play the Single player game....
What happens is that when you install it, it'll register to the server once, then every 5 days, it will try to revalidated itself.
If an internet connection is not available then, (or the servers are dead), it'll wait another 5 days to validate. (it will try on every launch at this point until a success).
After 10 days without connecting, the game will cease to function.
Ok, what the hell?
Didn't they learn anything from the fiasco that was Bioshock PC with the assinine DRM?
Seriously, I think the only publisher these days that seems to get it, the their customers are NOT the thieves, is Stardocks :/
Knowing EA, they could certainly decide to pull the plug on the authentification servers in 1 or 2 years, rendering everyone's copies useless and forcing them to buy the next iteration of the game or something.
Faith in PC publishers = -1

Yes, I heard about spore too, though in this case, being always online should add to the experience since the game is supposed to "download/upload" creatures from other players to your world or something.
But Mass Effect being a Singleplayer game, online should not be a requisite :/
Apparently this is also going to be the case for Spore (should that ever see the light of day). Nothing quite like paying $50 for a game that will constantly mine your PC for data.
Well, personally it's not such a big deal for the internet. But what about people who plays on laptops and travel a lot, and don't have internet access? What if EA's marvelously "stable" servers goes down or are unresponsive? what happens in a few years, will the servers still be there and will Bioware be allowed to patch it before getting shut down by EA?(because you know, this will happen eventually knowing EA's track records)
If you're a PC gamer you have an internet connection. Deal with it.
Actually, I don't think this is a good step forward. As yet again this will pose no problems for pirates, and will mostly be a bother to legit users.
More developers should take example upon Stardock, their published games have 0 copy protection and ends up selling extremely well.
And also, don't props Bioware, as they're not the one pushing the Securom protection crap, but EA.
If you didn't know, the PC version of Assassin's Creed was leaked almost a month before it was in retail stores. It takes almost NO effort to pirate PC games any more, unless you want online play. There were some big issues with Crysis too, so many that crytek almost went out of buisiness. I agree that it's a good step forward for the industry, but it that "cease to function" thing sounds like an easy patch to cover. There's always a sneaky way around something, but props to the Mass Effect team for their efforts.
