  • Overall

This game is a lot of fun. Area 51 is a mix between Doom and the typical gun shoot-em-ups that you see in every arcade. Unlike most gun-based games where you remain standing still and simply shoot at bad guys who pop up on a static background, this game moves around an environment - namely, the infamous Area 51 military base in Nevada - as you complete your mission. This gives the game an added dimension which puts it above other games of its type. Now all someone needs to do is figure out a way to let the player control the movement (the game does it for you) and they could have a hit on their hands.

Not only is this game fun, it's not incredibly hard either. The aliens go down with a shot or two, and the game gives you enough strength that you'll last a little while against their onslaught, even if you're not a great player. The graphics are extremely well done, and it's very fast-paced.

The storyline isn't as goofy as you see in other games, and the screens which run while the game isn't in use are actually fun to watch. There is also a variety to the backgrounds as you play. First you'll find yourself in a warehouse, and later you'll find yourself firing off the back of a jeep as it careens through the compound. There is a certain amount of gore, but it's nothing like what you'll see in a game like Mortal Kombat. And, at fifty cents, the cost is reasonable too. Do yourself a favor and check it out the next time you're in the arcade. ~ Brad Cook, All Game Guide
