A secret Imperium research base has been stumbled upon by a Freedom Guard. Within the remote base located at the edge of the galaxy is a possible cure for the mark. The Freedom Guard must first master semi-intelligent animals, and battle the Imperium's secret intelligence organization to succeed. Sit down, brace yourself, because this newfound technology could change the face of the war.

Dark Reign Expansion: Rise of the Shadowhand explores new features with twenty new missions and over a dozen new units. Players can shape the battlefield, building roads to speed up transport, and creating bogs to, well, bog down the enemy.

Xenite units include The Gant, The Grendel, The Ranger, The Grendel Rider (a ranger on a Grendel), The Avenger, The troop transport (equipped with a turret mounted laser rifle), and The Power Striker (capable of completely disrupting Taelon power currents).

Shadowhand units include The Reaper, The Gemini Tank, and The Fury Battlewalker. Players can expect to see The Hades (a devastatingly powerful bomber), and the EMP Device (neutralizes computer communication devices).
