Welcome to Impossible Mission, a fixed-screen platform game featuring elements of action, adventure, and puzzle solving. The game's spy hero must collect different images that can be combined to reveal important information. As the game begins, the hero is awaiting command in an elevator.
The elevator acts as a hub of sorts. One can use the elevator to move around and enter other rooms. While in the elevator the hero has access to a menu screen located at the bottom. This menu contains buttons for picture manipulation and allows the hero to call HQ with new information. There is also a map that shows where the agent has been.
Images are obtained by entering and searching the rooms located on either side of the elevator on each floor. Most rooms contain lift mechanisms, robots, desks, and bookcases. While images are often found in desks or bookcases, the robots have been created to guard the rooms. These baddies are armed with electrical blasts, so watch out for the deadly current. In order to move around these rooms and reach all of the desks and bookshelves, the hero must jump from one platform to the next and make use of the lifts.
Searching a desk or a bookcase takes time. The player must wait to obtain information as a "search meter" is displayed. When the meter runs out, the search is over. If an item was found, it will be added to the inventory. The desk or bookcase will then vanish. Also located in some of these hazard-filled rooms are computer terminals. Terminals can be used to reset the lifts and to disable the guard robots for a short period of time. A password is needed to access these options.
Once a room has been completely searched and its hidden items found, it's time to head back to the relative safety of the elevator and examine the new clues. If a picture has been found, it will be added to the collection. Pictures can be manipulated and rotated using the buttons at the bottom of the menu screen.
In order to solve certain puzzles, images must be combined. This menu screen also contains an "undo" button and an option to terminate all image manipulation. When discovered images can be combined, call HQ and let them know of the success. ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide
