After Taito lost a lawsuit filed by the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, the company was forced to redesign its popular Jungle King game. The dispute in the lawsuit had been over the look of the hero character (a long-haired, loincloth-wearing jungle man) and a "Tarzan yell" at the game's opening. To comply with the judgment against them, Taito changed the hero into a khaki-wearing, white hat-sporting jungle explorer. Apart from the hero's new look the game was exactly the same.

The protagonist is out to rescue his sweetheart from natives. Along the way to rescuing his darling, he must avoid monkeys, rocks, crocodiles, and the natives themselves. Each of the four areas presents a different challenge. In level one , you must guide the hunter as he swings from vine to vine across the tree tops. You must avoid falling or lose one of your three turns. The vines oscillate at varying speeds, so timing is essential if you want to grab the next vine.

In level two, you must swim through a dangerous river filled with crocodiles. Armed with only a knife, you can choose to avoid the dangerous reptiles or stab them. The crocodiles can only be killed when their mouths are closed or partially closed. If a crocodile's mouth is fully open, an attempt to stab it will result in the hunter's death.

In level three, you must charge up a hill while avoiding falling boulders of multiple sizes. Some boulders are roll close enough to the ground that you jump over them, but some boulders bounce so high that you must bolt under them to avoid having the hero squashed.

In level four, the final one, you must jump over two bouncing natives and run to your girlfriend. To get the girl, you must jump over the first native, hesitate, and then jump over the second native. Once you have cleared both natives, simply run to the girl. Once you have accomplished that task, the hero is whisked back to level one to start a more difficult rescue attempt. ~ Anthony Baize, All Game Guide
