In Pitfall II, Pitfall Harry is back exploring vast underground cities that haven't been inhabited -- at least by man -- for hundreds of years. The Apple II adaptation of this excellent classic delivers nothing more and nothing less than a game that resembles the original version on the Atari VCS, minus the catchy tune playing constantly in the background. Though played mostly in silence, this version duplicates the sprawling map of the original, yet is missing major control nuances vital to the game. In the Atari VCS version, if Harry were falling down a mineshaft, you could edge him towards a ledge in midair; that subtle control isn't present in the Apple II version, as Harry will sometimes plummet directly to the bottom level, or straight into a bat. Other than that important control issue, Pitfall II is a respectable port of the original game. ~ Earl Green, All Game Guide
