Similar in design to Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series, Xena: Warrior Princess for Game Boy Color finds the title character trapped in a dream world called Psychosia. Equipped with the ring-like chakram and her trusty blade, Xena must find the source of her misfortune, Darphus, while battling all manner of creatures. She will also need to confront Morpheus, for he alone has the power to send Xena back to the real world.
Action is played primarily from an overhead perspective as Xena roams the dream world searching for a way home. Along the journey she can find and use items ranging from keys to maple syrup, which are stored in an inventory screen apart from the main view. Players are free to equip up to two items from inventory using both the A and B buttons. Xena's life force is represented by hearts, which increase in number after finding heart containers across the land.
Up to three games can be saved via battery backup, and owners of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys can link up with Xena to play as Hercules and vice versa. Not only does the transferred character retain his or her original weapons, he or she will be able to access secret levels otherwise unreachable. Data from two Xena games can also be linked together, allowing one player to transfer Xena's stats and items to another cartridge. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide
