Microsoft Makes Xbox Price Cut Official

Remember Remember the Fifth of September

by Coop

After weeks of, well, not saying a word on the rumor, Microsoft has apparently made official the $50 price reduction for the Xbox 360. This comes a week after the price dropped in Japan, a month after they lost July's sales to the PSP, and a month and a half after I bought my girlfriend an Xbox 360 for her birthday. Eff.

This means that the new prices are as follow:

  • Xbox 360 Arcade - $199
  •  Xbox 360 - $299
  •  Xbox 360 Elite - $399

So if you were looking for an appropriate time to pick up an Xbox 360 I would say it has come. The arcade is now cheaper than the Nintendo Wii, the 120GB elite is the price of the current PS3 sku, and the regular edition is where the regular edition was a month ago after the 60GB version was released. I'm sure there will be plenty of pissed off 360 owners who grabbed the 20GB when they thought they were getting a deal, but on the contrary, they were hosed.

Straight up hosed.

considering the price of the system, $50 off doesn't seem like much of a deal.

well 50 bucks off, but then you gain that 50 bucks back once you get live.

It's worth it, though, to have the LIVE service. I like it, anyway. Many agree with me.

Man! I bought my 360 right before they released the 60GB version for the same price. Oh well, thinking about it now, I doubt I would need the extra space.

Oh Lawd! Is dat sum fanboyism?
People happily pay for WoW, which is more than $50 a year, and only works for one game.

I don't mind missing the harddrive. I stream my music and video from my PC and since i don't need to worry about installing games, I'll keep the HDD for saves only.

not fanyboyism, i think live is a great service, i have no issues with it. But for what the PSN gives me, for free, i prefer it.

Inferior hardware or not, XBLA is where it's at now. The PSN is good, but not nearly as robust as what you get with the 360.

I dont see why the price needs to come down on the PS3. If the PS3 SKU is the same price as the 360 Elite, yet the PS3 comes with wifi, easily upgradeable HD, a free online service and blu-ray player, then why is the PS3 still considered overpriced? If anything the 360 Elite is overpriced..

Now dont get me wrong, I wouldnt mind a 360 one day if i got it free, its still a good system, I just do not buy the whole, PS3 is overpriced, when the 360 is the same price and does not include a lot of what the PS3 does.

but hey they are both great systems and this is a good price drop for people who want a 360.
