NYCC 09: Hands-On Deadly Creatures
Good Wii exclusives? Few and far between. Good bug games? Even more rare. This being the case, Deadly Creatures stands out on premise alone, and the added voice talent of Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Hopper make a game so perplexing you might throw a clot thinking about it. Luckily, the gameplay itself pays off, and my time with it during the NYCC left me excited for the creepy-crawly adventure.
If you're thinking that a fear of bugs would scare you from this game you might be wrong. While it does feature disgusting abominations such as spiders and scorpions, it gives perspective. Being on their level, seeing the world how they see it, it helps, and sets a fantastic mood. Trash and garbage towered over me as I wandered the desert caves, exploring in a way only a bug could. Both the spider and scorpion played differently enough to justify the separation, but similarly enough to create a cohesive feel. Again, this was only a small part of the game, but I assume the differences will grow in later levels, taking advantage of each's unique abilities.
Crawling on walls and devouring foes all fell into place well, and the game's presentation earns it high marks without ever feeling sloppy. It's extremely obvious that Rainbow Studios put a lot of heart and soul into Deadly Creatures, and it bleeds through with gameplay that needs to be played to be believed. Not because it's the best out there, but everyone making a game for the Wii should watch Deadly Creatures for an example of how to handle a Wii exclusive.
Beyond that there's little to say about Deadly Creatures. It doesn't appear remarkably deep, but that isn't always a bad thing. Graphics are above most Wii titles, controls are fairly simple, and the game looks to boast a story above most on the system. Hopefully the final product pays off, because this is definitely a game that deserves to be good.

The first two levels were fun, but it seems like it would maybe get repetitive later in the game. I do want to find out more about this "murder mystery" angle, though.

I'll be disappointed if you don't kill one of the humans. The game is called DEADLY Creatures, for Pete's sake!

I'm actually going to love this game. I like playing an animal more than a humanoid in video games, I always have. I don't feel as upset seeing my character die, and I feel like playing games like Lions, SimAnt, and maybe Deadly Creatures teaches me something or lets me experience something I really couldn't otherwise.
What other games will have you saying "Oh god I got separated from the pride and I haven't mated in 15 minutes."
