NYCC 09: Hands-On Invincible Tiger

Unrelated to Sex Panther

I'm not sure where to begin here. Namco Bandai didn't have the most impressive showing at the New York Comic Con. That isn't as much of a slap in the face as it might sound, since it's more the fault of other companies bringing games like Madworld, Prototype, and Ghostbusters. Still, when a publisher has half of their booth dedicated to Afro Samurai, a game released several weeks earlier, it isn't exactly a good sign at first. Luckily, looks can be deceiving, and many of the games they had were quite entertaining. Of them, Invincible Tiger might have been the most unique.

Invincible Tiger is a 70s kung-fu film brought to life. Grainy graphics overlay the 2.5D platformer, which has the main character kicking and punching his enemies into submission. In a way, it's quite like Rag Doll Kung-Fu, but with less of a focus on physics and more of an emphasis on over-the top combat akin to Bruce Lee films. It was fun, fast, and the demo left me wanting more.

I suppose leaving the player "wanting more" is all a New York Comic Con demonstration can ask for. Deeper mechanics, such as dodging and environmental attacks, will likely be realized in the full version, which will also feature multiplayer modes. Cooperative play and four player battles are more than enough to add this game to my radar, and hopefully it is able to deliver an exciting, tongue-in-cheek singleplayer story as well.

Before heading to NYCC I hadn't heard of it, and now Invincible Tiger has been added to the list of anticipated downloadable games for the summer. Then again, that list seems to be growing pretty fast these days, so I'm not sure how much of a compliment that really is.

Be sure to continue watching for more information on Invincible Tiger as its release approaches.

I don't know, the downloadable fighting game market seems to be a little crowded right now. We'll see whether or not this is actually worth it.
