Small Bits of Alan Wake Revealed
Remedy has nothing new to show for Alan Wake at this year's GDC. This isn't really news. What is news, however, is that Norwegian site Gamer.no had a sit down with Oskari Hakkine, lead developer at Remedy, where he was able to get a little bit more information on the vaporware that is Alan Wake.
The story follows bestselling author Alan Wake, who has suffered from a spell of writers block over the past two years. In an attempt to spur his creativity, his wife takes him to Bright Falls, Washington. However, before long, his wife disappears and pages from his current manuscript go missing, and Alan needs to find them. The interview goes into some technological aspects of Alan Wake involving the lighting and weather systems, which Hakkinen likens to Remedy's innovative work with bullet time in Max Payne, but there are few actual details given. There will be driving, action, shooting, and exploration, separated into chapters that end in cliff hangers. Oskari says that the team is very closer to truely perfecting this idea, so hopefully it won't end up as muddled as it did in Alone in the Dark.
The most interesting bit, however, has nothing to do with the technicalities or light. Hakkinen has revealed that while Alan will encounter dangerous scenarios, they will not take the form of monsters or zombies. Instead, they're shooting for a realistic, authentic breed of horror, setting Alan in situations that are more frightening and atmospheric. If nothing else, Remedy has proven themselves at creating eerie and extremely immersive enviornments, so there'sa good chance that they'll be able to create something fantastic in Alan Wake.
Though, after reading the interview and finding out more about the game, I believe even less that it will ever be released. All joking aside, Oskari is being simply too general, and it sounds like the game might not exsist. Either that, or it's much simplier than he's willing to admit, and the game will play more like Indigo Prophecy than whatever voodoo super-title he's promoting it to be. You can check out the rest of the interview here, and be sure to check back with us around E3 time where we'll likely have no more information on Alan Wake.
