Wii Music Not Competing With Rock Band
Mario Galaxy Not Competing With Gears of War

While discussing Nintendo’s upcoming Wii Music, Nintendo's VP of Corporate Affairs, Denise Kaigler, talked about the game’s aim. "We're not competing [with those other games]. We're expanding. We're creating new experiences through Wii Music, new enriching opportunities for consumers to create something that's unique to their own musical tastes." In other words, don’t expect to hear Nintendo making comparisons between Rock Band, Guitar Hero, or even Rock Revolution – Wii Music is in a class of it’s own. She then explained that the game is mainly a tool for creativity, getting a younger audience interested in music by allowing for them to create it with ease. Remember all of the "Wii is for kids and old people" jokes? This is where they come from. Well, I’ll give them the ease part, but I’d think to stop right before “creative.”
This sort of reminds me of MMORPG developers claiming that they aren’t trying to compete with World of Warcraft, despite very obviously trying to compete with World of Warcraft. If you release a product, as a developer, that has the same core theme as another game, the two are inherently in direct competition. What Nintendo is trying to say isn't that they don't plan on competing with Rock Band, but that Wii Music is easier and much more accessible - but it doesn’t help their “kid and old people friendly” image much.

Wii Music isn't competing with Rock Band because Wii Music doesn't stand a chance to sell nearly as many copies. Rock Band is a new kind of game altogether, Wii Music is a gimmick, and a lousy one at that.
