Once upon a time, in a more coin-operated world, fighting games were the apex of gaming. In recent years, other genres have eclipsed the popularity of fighters, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t still good games in this category. 2008 saw some really impressive challengers, a lot of them sequels. Soul Calibur IV and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe reintroduced us to some of our favorite all-time fighters, while bringing some new characters to the table. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix took the 8-bit sprites out of the arcade and let the World Warriors battle in full HD brilliance. And Bleach: Dark Souls reminded us that handheld fighters don’t need to suck.

But there could only be one best ever fighting game for 2008, and, in all honesty, the fight for the top spot wasn’t even close.
