Recent years have seen a great amount of terrific handheld titles. Prior to the release of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP, quality wasn’t necessarily something you associated with portable gaming, but in the 10 years since the Game Boy Color, gamers have been treated to what could only be described as a handheld renaissance. 2008 in particular was a solid year on all platforms. Sony’s PSP not only brought us a prequel to one of the most celebrated RPGs of all time in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, but we were also introduced to the eclectic musical masterpiece, Patapon. Not to be outdone, the Nintendo DS delivered a surprising amount of must have titles, ranging from RPG remakes like Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger, to DS originals like The World Ends With You and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2. The DS was also home to the perplexing puzzles of Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and the too cute for words tower defense game, Ninjatown.

Of course, there can be only one Best Ever this year, and even though it was a tough decision, this title had just enough to edge out the stiff competition to claim its throne.
