PS3 Price Drop Shocker - UPDATED
Here's the important part of the interview for your reading displeasure:
Gamesindustry.biz: How concerned are you about possible criticisms that you should have given European consumers what SCEA has given US consumers, i.e. the option to pay a lower price?
David Rees: Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.
Gamesindustry.biz:So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
David Rees:In America, yes.
So if you've just been dying to play games like Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and... uh... Motorstorm, you should probably get to your local game retailer, like, today, and get the PS3 before the good price point is all sold out.

UPDATE: Further research on the issue reveals that it seems this is correct - when they are gone they are gone. Sony says they have enough 60 Gig models left to last several months, but who knows.- Comments

This news prompted me to buy a PS3. After running into some problems with it being a piece of crap machine (some of it because it was a used box) I returned it. Gamestop had another but I decided to take that time to go back to my hatred and not own a PS3 until something worth while comes out for it.

As much as I detest Micro$oft, this just goes to show that they're the clear-cut winners at E3 2007. The Wii, while innovative in it's design & vision, isn't geared at hardcore gamers (their 'hardcore" game is Metroid? ROFL). The industry, as a whole, has forgotten that it's the hardcore gamers that have put them at the forefront of the entertainment dollar (this year, ppl will spend more money on gaming than movies). Hardcore gamers are also the group most responsible for rapid innovations in computing hardware as a whole- buying hardware at a faster rate than Moore's law dictates.
If you absolutely MUST have the PS3, I suggest you take those $500 & put it in a 1-yr CD acct. In the time that your money matures, there might actually be some games worth the hefty price tag & you'll be richer to boot.

Sony has lost the little respect points they had left from me.
100 dollars for 20 extra gigs is bullshit. I can stop by my local Office Depot and get a 40 gig drive for 50 so dollars.
Hell, I can but a 320 gig external HD for 120 dollars there.

well it costs
$100 for a 20GB hardrive for a 360, so i guess they can some what justify it. But sony tried to make this too much like they're failed PSX ( sony's attempt at putting everything in one box), all i wanted was a game console. taht probably could have taken off $200 off the price by taking away all the things we didn't need on it.Suavy Fri, 13 July 2007 02:48PM

the worst part about this is the blasé way that rees admits this is basically a ploy to sell off unwanted merchandise. if they cared at all about their target audience they would have handled this much better.

Wow, is Sony that desperate to sell PS3s? And does 20 extra GB really justify an additional $100?
Perhaps I'm looking at this with the wrong perspective. When the 80GB model is released, you're basically getting 20GB free? And let me guess: This upgraded model will still not provide an HMDI cable for 1080p support? *sigh* This does not make Sony's PS3 any more appealing to me.
