friendship with a cube
the companion cube helps but does it really feel like a companion?
by Kumar-09
I have just finished playing Portal Sunday night and can i just say, its awesome. When I started to look back at what happened on the level with the companion cube, I realized, why does the cube have to be so cute. On top of that when I was forced to let go of the cube into the disposal fire, I immediatly dropped it with out caring. After I had dropped it, the A.I. said that it was the fastest it had ever seen the cube disposed of. Finally getting to my point, what is the deal with people getting attatched to the cube, it's only a cube that opens doors, kind of like every other cube in the game. Seriously why go as far as to thinking the companion cube is your only friend. What about the other normal aperture science cubes, what about them? Show some love for them too people, not just the companion cube.

It has hearts on the sides.
But...it's a companion cube.
Those other boring, regular cubes don't want to be your companion like the companion cube does. In a matter of fact, the companion cubes sole existence is to be your companion, and if you should find other uses for your companion cube (i.e.-to hold open the door for you, or being your bullet proof shield when an auto turret finds you, they are that good of a companion) you are only giving the companion cube greater purpose than its creator did, thus making its life more fulfilling. The companion cube gets more love because they give more love. Also, the cake is a lie.
I'm with you Kumar.... why so much love for the companion, and we throw the other cubes away like so many plastic bags?
There's only one cube in my life...
"The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak."
The two qualities I look for in a long-term companion!
Normal aperature science cubes are much more likely to talk and/or stab you. I think that's where the draw is. And the fact that it's Valve and everything the touch is gaming gold, especially when it comes to spin off merchandise and the like. I mean who here has given serious consideration to buying a Headcrab (one word?) plushie? And if Valve made a crowbar with the HL logo on it tell me there wouldn't be a rush on those.
