by Nikkita

In light of Labor Day weekend, a national holiday, let's take some time to get down to business. If you are 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen, it is your duty to vote. If you're having a hard time getting it together to register, here are some helpful sites. Rock the Vote Rock the Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization, that was founded in 1990. Rock the Vote was a result to mobilize, inspire young adults to get educated and become aware of major political issues. Being an organisation that started in defense of free of speech and artistic expression, Rock the Vote is supported by many famous musicians, actors, and comedians. You may be familiar with RTV from MTV. The site itself is pretty packed with some persuasive editorials including the "why vote?" button which lists the current issues that are important to not just everyone, but young voters like yourself, including jobs, education, global warming, Iraq, reproductive rights, gay marriage and human rights. RTV doesn't fall short on resources, guidelines and help, in the registration process. Register to vote directly from the site, and use their helpful information guides to cruise you through any hiccups. If you're interested in getting active, RTV is looking for more people to join their street team and encourage other young Americans to vote. Hey, you can be one of those smart cookies with a clipboard at concerts and other cool events. RTV sports some pretty sweet merchandising, including a tee shirt that states "Give a Sh*t! Vote!" Also make sure to check out their media and PSA's, there's a lot of familiar faces. It doesn't stop there. RTV is always up and running, shining light on issues, even after the elections are over. Declare Yourself Like RTV, Declare Yourself is a non-profit, non-partisan campaign geared towards young people, more specifically, all of those who have turned or are turning 18. In the 2004 and 2006 elections, Declare Yourself helped register over 1.2 million people. DY hasn't been around as long as RTV, but they definitely made it in time to make a difference. Also like RTV, you can register to vote directly from the DY site. For example, Hayden Panettiere (yes, yes, the cheerleader from heroes) a spokeperson for DY celebrated her 18th birthday by registering with DY to vote. DY will guide you through the registering and voting process. The site is simple and easy to navigate. One box alone will direct you to everything you need to know. Make sure to stop by to get some digital-buttons to help get your friends rolling too. Also check out the great PSAs by David LaChapelle What are you waiting for? There is no excuse not to vote, unless you're not 18. Get to it, and get involved!
