Ubisoft: The Wii is For the Ladies

Ubisoft, the makers of some truly terrific games, have also been making a name for themselves as the foremost publisher of shovelware over the last couple of years. For every Assassin’s Creed or Beyond Good and Evil, there are about twenty Imagine or Petz titles vomited out, mostly for the Wii and DS. Obviously, games like Imagine: Fashion Babysitting Pony Partyz OMG aren’t being targeted towards adult men, but the growing number of female gamers, who are apparently interested in Nintendo’s systems over any other. Speaking with Tulsa World, Ubisoft brand manager Ann Hamilton stated "What's driving the Wii sales is the use of Wii by women, girls and families. It's a really female-driven platform."
While I don’t have any evidence to prove or disprove Hamilton’s statement, what really gets me is the fact that Ubisoft is trying to tap into the female market by mass-producing absolute trash. Whether or not a game about fashion or caring for animals is interesting, I find it hard to believe that a series that often has multiple installments come out in the same week could have the kind of quality that gamers want and deserve. I know Ubisoft isn’t the only offender in this department, but they are undeniably a big one. The general idea I’m getting from them is “Girls don’t know any better because they don’t play a lot of video games, so let’s put out a whole bunch of shit really fast, they’ll never know the difference.”
I won’t turn this into another rant about not being taken seriously because of this type of ignorant thinking, but I can’t be the only one who finds this annoying. Also, Tulsa World’s headline and teaser of “Game industry finally notices girls: Design, baby-sitting video games target a growing market” certainly didn’t make me less offended. It’s one thing to want to make games that are targeted towards girls; I don’t give a shit about babies or clothes, but I’m sure someone out there does. However, don’t make a bunch of crappy titles that are basically all rehashes of each other with almost no development time and say “There you go, ladies!” To be fair, Ubisoft has made a few stinkers directed at the male market (Nitrobike? Shaun White Snowboarding? Yeah, they were real winners), but we don't get ten of those titles in the same year. You’re Ubisoft! I know you can make really good games, so why do you not care about quality when it comes to Wii and DS titles? And by the way, guyz, misspelling words on purpose doesn’t make you cool--it makes you a fucking idiot. Stop it.

I think when any console is new people just shovel shit onto it so there are titles. There are some really good girl games that hit the boy market, too.
Nintendo laid the groundwork for this when Nintendogs became a smash. Now everyone is just feeding off the frenzy created by success of that type of game. Eventually the market will go down when the next best thing comes out, but then you'll have people trailing the coattails of that.
The only thing we can hope for is that children and their parents become more knowledgeable about games and their quality, but as I've said before children have a capacity that we don't to enjoy terrible games- games that an adult might pick up, play a few minutes of, realize that the controls are broken and put down out of boredom. A child will play a broken game, and they won't know why they like a good game over a bad game.
Blame the children.

"Female-driven"? What the hell does that even mean? I mean, I get it Ubi - you want to move the shovelware (Bratz, Petz, Babyz, et al) to the mom's who you believe make the buying decision. But language like this has no place coming from a representative of a company that makes so many games for the Wii. This sounds more like something a competitor as a complaint.
