Dead Space 2 Launch Trailer Smashes Pumpkins
Isaac Clarke, Meet Billy Corgan
by Sean
In case you haven't heard me say it yet, I'm really excited for Dead Space 2. The first game in the franchise was such an incredibly rich and claustrophobic survival horror title, and all of the pre-release buzz surrounding the sequel has got me thinking that Visceral Games has not only brought back all of the terror of the original, they've been able to expand on it. Today, the developer has released the final launch trailer for the game, which you can (and should) watch above. While there's not a ton of new footage shown off in it, there is the addition of a Smashing Pumpkins track, which should make fans of 1995 happy. With just under two weeks to go before the game hits store shelves, there's not much time left to see if Visceral can deliver on the promise of a great game. While the demo gives a tantalizing (if regrettably brief) taste of the game, there are some elements of the above trailer that have me a bit nervous that too much of the fear factor has been stripped from Dead Space 2. First of all, although you in fact did get to see Isaac's face in the first game, a lot of the trailers and screenshots for the second show that his helmet is coming off way more than I think is warranted. In that same vein, one of my favorite things about the original game was that Isaac could best be described as the strong silent type, in so much as the man didn't speak. Again, it's way too early to tell, but it looks like Visceral has taken the character in a totally different direction, choosing to make his insanity a lynchpin, and having him go on whiny rants.
Again, we won't have to wait much longer to find out whether the changes are for the better or not.
