Penny Arcade and Hothead Games Launch Greenhouse

New Home for Independent Game Developers

by Sean

Indie studio Hothead Games' upcoming point-and-click adventure On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness, based on the wildly popular Penny Arcade comic, has been exciting gamers since it was shown in an alpha build at last year's PAX. Hothead and Penny Arcade announced yesterday the creation and beta launch of Greenhouse, an online store dedicated to digital distribution of independently developed games.

Greenhouse, which is still in beta, will initally be the exclusive retailer of On the Rainslick... for PC, Mac and Linux users. The XBL version of the game is still slated to launch the same day as the other three, although no date has been announced yet.

In addition to On the Rainslick..., Greenhouse aims to be a home for independent game distribution. Here's how the site's "About" section describes their mission:

The Greenhouse is a new distribution platform operated by Greenhouse Interactive, dedicated to supporting independent game development worldwide. We help indie developers get their games into the hands of gamers, and that gives gamers easy access to new and innovative games that they might otherwise have missed.

With the news last week of the pricing and specs hitting the tubes, and now the announcement of Greenhouse launching, can it really be too much longer before gamers are able to take on the roles of Gabe and Tycho and beat up some hobos, blast some fruit-fuckers, and generally act like the Steampunk-inspired 2D characters we'd all love to be?
