Microsoft Claims Price Drop Doubles 360 Sales

Over Last Week’s Numbers

by Veggie Jackson

Following the sizable price drop for all Xbox 360 models, Microsoft has stated that sales of the console doubled last week.  According to a Microsoft email sent to Bloomberg.com, retailers are reporting a sales increase of 100 percent for all Xbox 360 models.  No specific numbers were mentioned, but MS claims that some models increased sales by over 500 percent.

We won’t be able to verify this until the NPD numbers arrive for September, but if it’s true, it would mark the first time the 360 has outsold the PS3 in months.  The article, and presumably Microsoft’s email, makes no mention of whether they’re referring to American sales or worldwide sales, but one can assume that the recent release of the 360-exclusive, Tales of Vesperia, would have given a boost to the console’s recent Japanese sales.  Either way, it seems that the price drop, which now positions the Xbox 360 Arcade version as the lowest-priced current-gen console option, is working.  If Sony wants to continue calling 2008 the “Year of the PS3,” they may need to sweeten the deal.

So that means if there was a shortage... all of Japan only had under 1000 Xboxes? I guess that makes some kind of sense to somebody. I'm pretty sure there's 1000 inbetween Philly and Doylestown alone.

I'm really curious to see how they twisted those numbers around... I have a hard time imagining that sales would literally double.
