Last week, Capcom marketing director Matt Dahlgren made it pretty clear that Wii owners would be getting some Resident Evil loving soon, by stating that "I don't think Resident Evil 5 would transition well onto the Wii…That being said, Nintendo Wii fans will be very happy very soon."  Until now, however, no one knew the specifics of said loving.  That all changed today when the newest issue of Famitsu announced Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

According to the article, this new offering will be a sequel to the on-rails Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, and will retell the events of 1998’s Resident Evil 2.  As of yet, there is no release date for Japan or the US, and no price point has been set.

Resident Evil 2 is one of the most beloved games in the franchise, and many fans have been clamoring for a game to further expand on its story.  Personally, an on-rails shooter wouldn’t have been my top pick for the best way to do this, but Umbrella Chronicles sold reasonably well, and the development costs for a game like this as compared to Resident Evil 5 must be infinitesimal, so I understand the move completely.  I don’t like it much, but I understand it.
